In our most recent episode, Claire and I talk about getting shambled, aka becoming zombies, in our discussion of Dread Nation by Justina Ireland. You can read our full summary here!
Dread Nation is an alternate history book which fits in perfectly with our latest book club challenge: Something Ain't Right Here: Read a book with an alternate history or set in an alternate universe. It's almost like we picked it on purpose! This one takes place after the Civil War. This time, the war ended because after the soldiers died, they came back as ZOMBIES! And I know what you're thinking... Ooh! Zombies! This book must be SCARY! It's not. It's more about the time period and how people of color were (mis)treated but then there are zombies. It's a good story with heart, humor and a couple of badass heroines. We go off on rages a few times in the episode about how much we hate some of the characters for being absolute racist garbage people and we hope you'll do the same.
This episode is also great because, if you'll listen carefully, you'll notice that I'm no longer in the noisiest apartment in the world. It's quite lovely. Still a little echoey as not everything has been unpacked, but oh my, it's so much better than it was before. I only erupted in rage at the book characters this time and not at my physical surroundings.
Here's a recording picture in which we both have Birds and I am surrounded by moving blankets to muffle some of the echo. But look at us! We're enjoying the silence.
Until next time, don't get shambled!
Amanda
