White Smoke OR Nope!

Writer's picture: Fictional HangoverFictional Hangover

In our episode this week, Claire and I were joined by Tamara from Shelf Addiction podcast to talk about White Smoke by Tiffany D. Jackson. I was a guest on Tamara's show a couple months back and now she's joining in on our fun! Or did she join in on the horror?! She suggested we read this one and, if you didn't know, White Smoke has been described as The Haunting of Hill House meets Get Out. I gotta say, I can't disagree. So what happens?

Mari and her blended family move from California to the Midwest to escape some drama from her past. She got involved in drugs and nearly ODed, so they're moving for a fresh start. Mari's mom got a unique artist in residence opportunity from a program that offered her and her family a house to stay in rent free, which helps with the bills from Mari's OD. The house and the neighborhood aren't at all what they appear to be on the outside, though. It looks quaint and happy, but... what's that smell in the house? Did that door just close on its own? IS THIS HOUSE HAUNTED?! We found ourselves saying, "NOPE!" several times throughout the book and the episode if that gives you any clues. Read the book, listen to our episode or check out our summary to find out more!
